Ten largest deserts (not including arctic deserts)
Deserts take up 20% of the Earth's land. Deserts are mainly located in between 30 degrees latitude north and 30 degrees longitude south, which is between the tropic of Capricorn and tropic of Cancer. There are deserts in every single continent; Asia, Europe, Oceania, Africa, North America, South America and Antarctica. These deserts are formed here mainly because of rain shadows.
Based on the three things that a biome needs; temperature, rainfall and sunlight. Hot deserts have a high temperature at daytime and a low temperature and nighttime. Hot deserts have a low amount of rainfall and hot deserts also receive a lot of sunlight during the day.
For cold deserts, cold deserts have a low temperature at daytime and a lower temperature at nighttime. Cold deserts also have a small amount of rainfall and cold deserts so receive sunlight but they don't receive as much in summer.
